2013 Lipton Cup Results

The 2013 Lipton Cup was a sunny light wind affair shortened to just 3 races on Saturday. 3 moderns and 4 classics took to the line ably set by RC Dan Taylor on sausage style race courses as prescribed in the DoG. The ebb for the extreme low tide (- 2.7 feet) concluded at 10:30 AM, thus a massive flood came in throughout the day, producing more than the usual rotation and coriolis effect in the bay. Imagine 14 feet (4+ metres) of water coming into Puget Sound over a quaternary cycle and you'll get the idea. Bob Cadranell's always fast Arunga struck first, winning the opener with Hank Thayer's St. Francis V ultimately prevailing in the regatta by winning the the second two races. It was a contest to see who could soak the lowest without losing speed running before the light northerly.

The classic division was taken by CaVa skippered by Don Martin from Vancouver with Steve Kinsey and Saskia also from Vancouver the only classic the beat them. Doing so in the first race. Racing for the rest of the classic fleet was at times close especially at mark roundings. Ca Va spent most of the day trying avoid the discarded breeze from the modern fleet.

The social side of the class enjoyed the Summer Solstice Dinner put on by the PMYC and the pleasant evening weather. The forecast for Sunday was to 10 knots and a little rain. Nothing materialized so it was off to Canada for CaVa and Saskia and the next PSSMA regattas scheduled Vancouver in early September.

Day 2 was even lighter and racing was abandoned. The Deed of Gift stipulates 3 races for ther regatta, thus the men of USA 100 St Francis V of the Newport Harbor Yacht Club are the winners this year in their immaculate Gary Mull design, which is the 1973 World Cup winner and showing none of her 40 years. The highest placing Classic award went to Don Martin and the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club crew of KC 12 Ca Va.
